Our Team

Charlise Berkel is the daughter of multilingual Dutch Caribbean immigrants, who, after attending the University of Chicago for undergraduate studies, began her career in bilingual teaching as a Montessori Elementary teacher. She most recently served as the Principal of Dr. Bessie Rhodes School of Global Studies until its closure. Before then, she served as Multilingual Coordinator (TWI) in the district’s Multilingual Department, supporting the adoption of a Spanish/English dual Language Arts curriculum in two-way immersion classrooms in six buildings district-wide. Her frontline service, as an ACC teacher, substitute TWI teacher and ESL teacher, keeps her connected to the evolving realities of the classroom and the diverse cultural linguistic journeys of students and their families. Ms. Berkel’s knowledge of literacy, biliteracy, content area instruction and pedagogy is expansive, with more than 20 years of teaching and coaching experience spanning preschool, elementary and middle school levels, across private, parochial, charter and public school contexts.

Ms. Whaley's journey in education spans over a decade, beginning as an Early Childhood teacher in Oklahoma City and later transitioning to teaching middle school math and science. Her experience as an Instructional Coach and Interventionist in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood was marked by her successful implementation of innovative programs that have significantly improved student engagement and academic outcomes. It was during her time in these roles that Ms. Whaley discovered her passion for developing student leadership and empowering young minds.

Ms. Whaley holds a master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Oklahoma, where she focused on building the leadership capacity of students and staff. Her leadership style is characterized by collaboration, empathy, and a strong commitment to student-centered learning. She is dedicated to fostering a positive and supportive school culture that promotes high expectations and celebrates the unique strengths of each student.

Beyond her professional achievements, Ms. Whaley enjoys reading, traveling, and spending quality time with her friends and family. Her enthusiasm for education and unwavering dedication to student success make her a valuable addition to our school community.
